Bags for Kids
The Association House of Chicago supports hundreds of underserved family and kids through the child welfare, foster care, family programs, etc. Recently, it has come to our attention that when kids are removed from their homes and placed in foster care, they gather their possessions to transport them in a garbage bag. Let’s make this difficult situation a little more dignified for these children.
We will collect and deliver to Association House your used or new:
backpacks
messenger bags
suitcases
laundry bags
travel bags
large tote bags

I live in the suburbs and belong to a Congregation in Hoffman Estates. I would love to organize a drive at my temple for our members. Please contact me.
That’s terrific Laury! Is there a local organization near you that serves foster children? I’m sure they would LOVE bags for kids. Please reach out to me if you would like to collect for Chicago foster kids. 773-525-6200
If you organize something in Hoffman Estates, please let me know!
What a great cause and push to help others!
There’s also a great non-profit organization called Together We Rise http://bitly.com/helpLocally – there’ mission is to put together these bags filled with some supplies to help children. That may be another option for people to get involved with?
Katherine – I love this and think this is great.
do you know where I could find other foster organizations in the suburbs – I am in a Northern suburb and would love to start something like this near me. You are doing a wonderful thing.
April, thank you for your kind words. Your message cut off. Please email me at katherine@buildingblockstoys.com
I’m curious and maybe you know. When someone comes to transport the child, a DCFS worker, etc. if the policy is to use a garbage bag, will the child/ case worker be “allowed” to use the new bag. I know these rules/systems are sometimes hard to undo. If the form says “use a garbage bag,” they are going to use the garbage bag, right?
I dropped off suitcases for donation at Purple Monkey yesterday. Would I be able to get a donation form for tax purposes?
Please email me at katherine@buildingblockstoys.com
I didn’t realize the expiration on this project: it’s February, and I have a large batch of bags from several people. Is there anywhere that I can still donate them?
